Why an Editor or Proofreader?
Dear Writer,
You know your manuscript backward, forward, inside, and out. And why shouldn’t you? You’ve edited and proofread every line so often, you’re probably dreaming of bright red proofreading marks. But before you submit to a publisher or self-publish your own book, the grammar gurus at Empire Publishing and Literary Service Bureau have a few words of advice: Hire an editor or proofreader to take one last look.
The reason that we recommend this is due to you’ve read your book too many times to catch all the errors. You know what you think you typed, so your brain will scan over it. Every independent author should have their book professionally proofread and edited before they self-publish. Trust us, this is not the time to cut corners. If you think your book may need help with the plot or characters, you’ll want to work with a developmental editor. And if you need another pair of eyes to catch spelling and grammatical errors, you’ll want a copyeditor or proofreader.
To encourage more sales, you need good reviews. Because reviews can make or break your book sales. Amazon uses book sales and positive reviews to determine rankings. Typos, grammar mistakes, and poor-quality production will negatively affect your reviews by readers. Don’t let an otherwise stellar story suffer because they mentioned proofreading errors in the reviews!
Professional book reviewers will also look much more favorably on your self-published book if it’s fully polished. Getting good reviews from the industry is crucial to garnering more readers and boosting your sales!
Self-publishing happens much faster than traditional publishing, where it can be many months, sometimes years before a book is published. But if you push to get your book self-published in a matter of weeks, you run a much bigger risk of mistakes slipping through. Even though you want to get your story out to the world as soon as possible, taking the extra time to have it professionally proofread and edited will ensure that buyers find your book worth reading.
Empire Publishing offers mechanical editing on basic packages. Upper packages such as the Platinum, Titanium, or Diamond come with copyediting. If you need to hire a proofreader there are many you can find on the internet, here is one company we often refer our authors to, but you can choose whoever you like. Also, Empire publishing may suggest you hire a developmental editor if your story lacks structure or needs to be beefed up a little. We do not focus on that, as we focus on getting your completed manuscript made into a book, and getting it published on all the platforms and distributors that come in your selected publishing package.
If you are not satisfied with the level of editing that is offered, then you need to seek more help outside of Empire, because once again, we are putting our efforts into publishing and distribution and the marketing tools that come with your package.
It is important that an author does these things before they submit for publishing. Regardless if it self publishing or traditional publishing.
You are not alone, we are here to help,. We guide our authors to be a success. Keep Writing! Let us do the rest.
