From the blog post of Francesca M.B an Author Representative for Empire Publishing Company.
The topic of book publishing is something that about 30,000 people a year endeavor themselves to obtain the proper information, and may try to self-educate by going to Google or many websites and blogs, or even attend seminars or classes to understand how to publish a book, and the options that are available to them.
I decided today, that I would write about the main topics in the circles of Authors and Editors and Publishers, in hopes that I may be of some help to anyone seeking advice or knowledge in book publishing.
I am an Author Representative, for Empire Publishing, that means in my own paraphrase, that I am “The Gatekeeper” to the Publisher. I am the liaison, the person who communicates in cooperation and helps to facilitate a close working relationship between the Author and the Publisher.
If anyone has ever tried to get a hold of the actual Publisher of any decent or reputable Publishing Company then they know that it is nearly an impossible thing to do. Publishers are busy, they do not have time to listen to people try to verbally pitch their story to them over the phone, nor do they have time to sit and explain how the publishing process works. So, that makes me (and other’s like me – Publishers Gatekeepers) the one who must maintain the abundance of patience that is required to repeat myself over and over again all day long every single day. I will be honest when I say, that 89% of the phone calls I get are from people who really have no clue how to get their book published, and do not understand even the basics of becoming an Author. However, they all have a passion or a desire to learn and to find a way to get their story published.
I feel sorry for some people who finally call me, after they have been calling all over God’s green earth for 6 months to a year, and they almost sound shocked when they get a real person on the other end of the phone line. In fact, some are so use to getting a recording they did not prepare their self to have a dialog about their manuscript. Then there are those, who made their first call to me, and have no idea how fortunate they were. Many think that they can find something better, or cheaper and so they hang up the phone rudely. Only for them to call me back a year later with their tails between their legs and feeling rather beat up from trying to find exactly what they are looking for, and for a price they are willing to pay.
Many of you reading this may have already figured this out and are shopping around for a micro-publisher. Be careful as well, as you search the Internet for options, you will run across organizations trying to sell you the so-called secrets of publishing and false promises of making you into a bestselling author. Most of them are scams designed for their own profit, not yours, and prey on those without any knowledge of the publishing industry. Then you will come across micro-publishers advertising that they take on all genres, they do not turn down any submissions, and the author will have no out of pocket expenses. Their sales pitch sounds very appealing to first-time authors, but please remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
It doesn’t matter if you are looking to self-publish using a self-publishing company, or if you are looking for a traditional publisher to publish your manuscript. Either way, it is important to be polite, and have respect for the person who may be the one helping you to turn your dream into a reality. Being nice will get you further than being pushy. And whatever you do, do not treat your agent or representative as though you do not trust them. If you do not trust them, then go find someone you do. I like what Emily Harstone wrote in the February issue of Authors Publish blog. In her post called “The Seven Most Common Manuscript Submission Mistakes” where she address the issue of politeness. She states “Politeness and Formality Is a Must” she also noted that announcing that you have a copyright on your work is suggesting that you do not trust the Publisher. She is right. Look, if you are a serious writer then you need to find a Publisher or an agent, and if you have already put a copyright on your work, you are only hurting yourself. The way Emily explains it sums it up pretty well… “Never say you have copyrighted your book with the Library of Congress. Your book is copyrighted the moment you put the words on paper. To have it done officially, dates your material–forever. Let the publisher do that. A book with a copyright date of 2013, and submitted in 2016, speaks volumes to an editor or agent. It means it’s been shopped around, a lot! If you are really worried someone will steal your material, register it with the Writers’ Guild, East or West. For a small fee they will record the work, proving when you wrote it. And then, unless you are submitting to an entertainment agent or producer, keep your mouth shut. Copyright marks and WGA numbers suggest you don’t trust us.”
Enough said on that, let’s move on to the next part of this discussion.
Once you find the person or company you want to work with, do not waste their time, make sure you have your manuscript polished up in a Word Doc and ready to send. You should already have a book cover idea ready. You do not need to design your own cover unless you want to – but you need to at least have a description of something you would like to see developed into a cover the same day you send your manuscript.
Also, make sure you have written a synopsis of your book, because it will also need to go through the editing process along with your manuscript. Ideally, by the time you have made the decision to move forward with publishing your book, you should have all your ducks in a row. If you want to include an Author picture, please already have those done and ready to send over with your manuscript and your synopsis. You should have already have written your Author Bio and submit that at the same time. This helps everything to go smoothly. It makes you look more organized and you will not be frustrating to every department in the company. Lean on your agent or your representative to help you get through the steps, but do not expect them to babysit you or hold your hand.
How to write a Synopsis:
In order for you to write a good synopsis you must understand what it is and what its function is. From the standard dictionary, a synopsis is:
Next let’s talk about cover design.
Everyone wants the amazing cover that will grab peoples attention. Face it, the facts are you have 3 seconds to capture or intrigue a person enough to take a closer look at your book. People have gone to college to learn how to do that. It is called visual marketing.
I know I have heard the graphic design team scream in horror when they see what an Author sends over to use for a cover. First of all, DO NOT TAKE ANY PHOTOS OFF OF GOOGLE. We see this all the time. It is a major no-no. If you cannot present a decent cover design, then allow the professionals who do it for a living to come up with something for you. Even a basic cover design can look good when they add in the special fonts and design tweaks. Also you can purchase designs for very cheap at Colorbox.com and then you will have an image that is yours.
Let’s talk about the color of your cover. I come across some first time Authors who have an idea in their head, and they do not think it all the way though. If you have ever looked through any simple cover design program, and they give you a color scheme to choose from, you will notice that white is never a book cover option. There is a reason for that. Because most books are being marketed and sold online, and white on white does not stand out. Even if you have brightly colored words and a bold font, it just will not be good for marketing purposes. Not only is white a poor option for a book cover, due to marketing reasons, but it is a poor color due to dirty fingerprints and dust, and smudges.
The absolute best seller book covers are almost always, red, green or blue, or a combination of these colors with black or white font. These colors are eye appealing and they work well for marketing too.

AS AN AUTHOR,
YOU MUST ALSO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR,
A SALESPERSON,
A MARKETING SPECIALIST,
AND A PUBLIC RELATIONS SPOKESPERSON.
Your book is a product that you are selling. So, therefore, treat it as a product. The best way to sell your product is to promote it. Create a Brand, either by your Title or by your own name. You must create a buzz for either your book title or your own name. If you don’t, then making a lot of money from the sale of your books will be very difficult.
There are two kinds of people out there, there are the people who think that if you write a book and publish it, you will get instant fame and recognition and an instant large residual income. And then there are the people out there who think all Authors are in the realm of the starving artist. The truth is, both people are correct and both are also wrong. I get a lot of people who ask me “How much money can I make if I publish my book?” And the answer to all of them is the same regardless of the genre of their book. It is really simple; the answer is a question: “How much are you willing to promote yourself and your product?”
Unless you are willing to treat your book promotions like a job, it won’t pay you. No excuses. If you do not promote, you will not sell books. The amount of time you put into promoting your product is directly related to how much you can make. You can make hundreds or thousands of dollars even millions of dollars, but you have to tell people who you are or tell people about your book. Press releases, YouTube book teasers and trailers, and handing out promotional items such as postcards and bookmarks. Get involved in writers groups, make friends with your local bookstore owners. Do book signings.
With the book publishing industry being taken by storm by self-published authors, and the market being flooded with books of all genres your book can be lost in the midst of all the others and may never sell more than a few copies per year. This can be very disappointing to an author who was expecting to make a living from the royalties of their book. Especially if they paid a lot of money to have it published. Keep in mind it doesn’t matter if you go with the most expensive publishing company or the cheapest when it comes to promoting your book. If you choose a publishing package and do not have a lot of time to launch your book, then you absolutely need to purchase a publishing package that includes some level of marketing. Do not get confused with the term “distribution” with “marketing” these are two completely different things. Distribution refers to the distributors of your book, meaning the places who will offer your book for sale, there are a lot of book distributors out there, do not assume that just being on AMAZON.com will instantly generate book sales.
Many first time authors think his or her book will automatically sell just by being on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, it will not. You need to promote your product every possible way you can. Utilizing both the internet and the old fashioned “two friends tell two friends” method. You need professional promotional items – keep in mind – quality is just as important as quantity. Most first-time authors cut corners and go the cheap route by using OfficeMax or Staples or worse yet, print flyers or cards from their computer. Handing out cheap promotional items is a bad reflection on your product. Empire Publishing offers premium quality promotional items at an affordable rate. The items and services we provide will separate you from those that don’t take the business of being a writer seriously. There are many reasons some writers succeed, and others do not. This is one of them because most authors don’t go above and beyond to become successful. To generate sales, you need to network and be seen. There are many ways to do this and we are here to assist you. Before you set up your book signings, order a large stack of books and also order quality Sell Sheets, Bookmarks, Posters, Business Cards and Postcards with your book cover and Title and book order link, or AMAZON link or if you have a website, include that on yourpromotionall material.
Learning how to maximize the benefits of Social Media is a powerful tool for authors. Investing time and resources into a social media strategy to promote and sell your book is most definitely a necessity. As an author, you are a business and your book is the product you are marketing to the public. Businesses that integrate their social media efforts with their content strategy and are seeing the impact of social media regarding lead generation, referral traffic, and revenue. Any author that is serious about selling his or her book knows that the social media outlets cannot be overlooked because they are useful and powerful promotional tools.

In the Book Publishing world we meet all sorts of interesting people. Meeting with a variety of different personality types, who have interests that can range from anything in the world to anything under the sun. Some are highly intellectual, some are seasoned by life experience, and some are just seeking information that may apply to them or someone they know. But over the course of time, I find that I keep answering some of the same questions over and over. Or I find that many Authors or aspiring Authors have not quite fully comprehended the entire concept of all that is needed to publish their book and do not really grasp the difference between Book Publishing, Book Printing and Vanity Publishing.
In this article, I am going to address each of these and my hope is that it will help send people in the right direction so they may accomplish what they are intending to accomplish.
Let me start by giving you an example of a typical conversation that we have on a daily basis with some people who call our company. And I know other Publishing companies out there are getting the same type of phone calls, probably due to lack of proper information for the author seeking advice.
The dialog usually goes something like this:
(Caller) “Hi, I want to meet with someone about getting my book published”
(Publisher’s Representative aka PR) “Wonderful! do you have your manuscript completed?”
(Caller) “Not yet, I just wanted to get some ideas of what to do next”
(PR) “What do you mean? Do you need a Ghost writer?’
(Caller) “NO, I just want to know what I need to do next to get my book published”
(PR) “The first thing you need to do is finish your manuscript”
(Caller) “Well, I need money, and I want to sell my story for a few thousand dollars to a publisher, I already have about 25 pages written and it is going to be really good.”
(PR) “Great start! Good Luck with that however. Before you can do anything to be paid, the work must first be completed, once completed you need to have it edited professionally. Once you do that, then you can submit your book to Publishing Houses, but you must follow certain guidelines before you submit your manuscript, such as write a very good query letter.”
(Caller) “But I have something that I know will sell and it will make a lot of money, My friend told me it should be a movie. I could finish it pretty fast, but could I get $1000.00 up front before I submit it?”
(PR) “No.”
(Caller) “Well, how can I get some money for my book?”
(PR) “Finish your manuscript first, then take the next steps, if you want to publish traditionally, you need to acquire a literary agent, you can find a lot of information on the internet, even on our own website www.Empirebookpubishing.com that will help you, or you can even download our free publishing guide “Self-Publishing Simplified“
(Caller) “Well I don’t have my own computer, and can’t do downloads.”
(PR) “What are you writing your manuscript in?”
(Caller) “I have a journal book I write in, I already have 25 pages written, I am writing in pencil so it can be erased if I make a mistake”
(PR) “When you are done with your story, you need to type it in a Word Doc, so that it can be uploaded, for publishing”
(Caller) “I don’t type very good, I thought the Publisher typed it up?”
(PR) No, there are typing services you can call to type it for you, but that is not what the publisher does.”
(Caller) “Well who should I call to get my book published?”
(PR) [re-explains the above steps]

Okay so you can see why I am writing about this from reading the above scenario, right?
So in order to simplify this message allow me to give you a brief idea of the different types of publishing available.
- Traditional Book Publishing: Where a Publisher retains rights to your book and receives 60% to 70% of the royalties depending on intellectual negotiations, between Author and Publisher. A large publishing house will not accept unsolicited manuscripts. They do not want to be bothered with the troublesome of having to sift through the thousands of manuscripts submitted monthly. Instead, the large publishing houses have handed the job of finding marketable manuscripts over to literary agents. To get through the door of well-known publishing houses, you must have an agent behind you, and acquiring an agent can be a difficult task. In the traditional publishing model, the publisher assumes the risk of publication and production costs, selects the works to be published, edits the author’s text, and provides for marketing and distribution, provides the ISBN, and satisfies whatever legal deposit and copyright registration formalities are required. Such a publisher normally pays the author a fee, called an advance, for the right to publish the author’s work; and further payments, and royalties, based on the sales of the published work.
- Self-Publishing: Where the Author retains all rights to their book and receives all the royalty and profits. Author controls the pricing of the book above the production costs, and promotions are the responsibility of the Author. The publishing process is usually outsourced, depending on the needs of the Author. An ISBN number is either purchased with Self-Publishing packages offered by Literary service bureaus or can be purchased through Boker.
- Vanity Publishing: In the words from Wiki, “The term “vanity press” is considered pejorative, implying that an author who uses such a service is publishing out of vanity and that his or her work would not be commercially successful.” A vanity press may assert control over rights to the published work and provide limited or no editing, some will offer cover art, or marketing services in exchange for their fee. Vanity presses may engage in deceptive practices or costly services with limited recourse available to the writer. Typically, a Vanity Publishing often times has their own press, and they will print and bind your manuscript, however, they have limited distribution if any for the Authors finished work. This is not a good option for those looking for worldwide distribution and a consistent residual income. However, a Vanity Press will serve a good purpose to those only needing a short run of printed books, or for those desiring to have less than 500 copies printed for their own use or for sales tools, such as someone who does lectures or teaching at conventions.
- Literary Service Bureau: A Literary Service Bureau assists a Self-Publishing Author in getting their book professionally published and available for mass distribution, so their book can be sold on the World Wide Web, such as AMAZON, Barnes & Noble and more than a dozen other online book distributors. Using a reputable Service Bureau with a highly trained staff can save a lot of time and headache. Service Bureaus offer services from editing, proper interior formatting, Cover Art Design, Author Webpage, eBook formatting, Websites, and Marketing materials to establish a solid platform for an Author to be successful. You can pay a Literary Service to do as little or as much as you like depending on your needs, and or depending on the word count of your book. For instance, if you have an 80,000 word manuscript that needs to be edited, you re going to pay more than someone who has a 30,000 word manuscript. Editing is charged by word count in most cases. But many Service Bureaus include editing with full service packages. Full service packages can be costly, ranging from $5,000.00 to $12,000.00 but most of these packages come with expanded distribution and marketing bundles, that will help launch the success of the book.
- eBook and iBook Publishing: This is also called “Digital Publishing” – An electronic book (or e-book) is a book publication made available in digital form, that is readable on the flat-panel display of computers, or other electronic devices such as Kindle by AMAZON or the eBook device Nook presented by Barnes & Noble. Although sometimes defined as “an electronic version of a printed book”, some e-books exist without a printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-reader devices. Sometimes an Author may want to include an eBook to enhance sales of their printed book, and yet there are some Authors who only choose to publish their work on digital devices and bypassing the printed book altogether. Another digital publishing device is iBooks, an Apple division, to download books on Apple devices such as iPad’s, iPhone’s, iPod Touch etc…
If you want to be a Self-Published Author of your work and share your story with the world, the best option is to choose a highly trained company designed specifically to do all that is required to ensure the best possible scenario for the success of your book. Empire Publishing makes publishing easy and stress-free. We have simplified book publishing by streamlining the process and making it virtually effortless for the author. Our publishing packages are superior in all regards to that of our competitors.
Write – Publish – Market – Make Money!

Go With The Gold!
The Title of this post may seem a bit on the self-serving side, seeing how it is directly about our Gold Publishing Package. In all honesty and true integrity of this post, I am not trying to toot my horn. However, I want you to know that I have diligently researched all the other credible Book Publishing companies on the world wide web, and I am confident that no one else out there is offering this much bang for your buck. In fact, I was half-tempted to raise the price, when I saw what others are charging for similar packages. But, I would not feel right about it. We have fair prices and superior production. Our number one competitor is charging $1499.00 and does not offer all that we offer, and we are offering it for $500.00 less! That is right; we are $500.00 less expensive and not to mention we offer a boatload more in this package. I honestly understand why so many Authors who are doing their research correctly acknowledges the benefits of choosing the Gold Package, with Empire Publishing. It is our number ONE selling package.
Here is what an Author gets when choosing the Gold Publishing Package:
The Gold package was precisely designed and well thought out for amateur and semi-pro authors who are serious about launching a career in writing without spending an enormous amount of money.
The “Gold” combo-publishing package includes upgrades on services, more custom cover options, interior options, many trim sizes, expanded distribution and promotional tools.
The “Gold” combo-publishing package includes a personal publishing consultant and/or Author assistant to be your “go to person” throughout the publishing process and will also help put together a marketing strategy for the author’s book. The amazing Gold Package also includes social media development to begin building an author platform that will place name recognition online which is needed to generate book sales. As with all Empire Publishing packages, authors receive more for the money than our what competitors are offering.
Furthermore, options are available to upgrade any service by adding on as a-la-cart items. Add-ons are very common because many times an Author realizes that they would benefit from additional marketing resources or publishing tools. However, with the Gold Package, everything an Author needs to sell books right out of the gate is built into this package.
