What is Copy Editing?

Copy editing is the process of revising written material to improve readability and fitness, as well as ensuring that text is free of grammatical and factual errors.” – Wikipedia

Your manuscript must be as close to perfection as possible. If not, the overly abusive critics on Amazon, the largest book distributor, will rip your book apart in reviews, and this will dramatically decrease sales. The reviews are so brutal on Amazon that authors are warned not to take them to heart. However, you need to avoid getting bad reviews in any way you can.

If you want to publish a high-quality book, whether it is self-published or you are planning to go the old school route of attempting to secure an agent that might land you a contract with one of the large publishing houses, you must have your manuscript professionally edited.

Empire Publishing performs two rigorous rounds of editing. The first is mechanical using academic software and then personally by editors with a Degree in English/Literature.

If you feel you need “Developmental Editing” for your manuscript,  then we recommend you find an editor that you like working with as this is a different type of process and you need to work more closely with the editor as it will or can change the “Author’s Voice” or overall tone. Where Copy Editing will not change the Author’s voice, it will just improve on the grammatical side of the manuscript.

The overall service will include:

  • Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
  • Verify the factual correctness of the information, such as dates and statistics (if the manuscript requires it).
  • Check the text for style, readability, and adherence to editorial policies
  • Rewrite small portions of text to improve clarity and readability

Our editors will not change your original manuscript but will make a separate document with the corrections. The author may request these suggested edits via “track changes” in a compare file (See photo for example) showing the original file combined with the edited file using Microsoft Word. We recommend submitting your manuscript as a Microsoft Word Doc.

Once this service has been performed, it is the author’s responsibility to accept or reject the editor’s corrections and make those changes to the updated manuscript that we send back to you. Our goal is not to alter your story or voice, but to enhance it for a better reading experience.

The estimated time frame for most manuscripts on average is approximately 3 to 5  weeks depending on length and complexity.

If you are adding this to other packages that do not include this editing in your package or hiring independently from publishing then the cost for Editing Service: Copyediting is billed at 0.015 cents per word. The word count is determined by utilizing the “Word Count” function in MS Word for Windows on the manuscript submission made by the author. We edit only softcopy (digital files) of books, not hard copies such as typewritten pages or actual books.

There is a 15,000-word minimum, so if your manuscript contains fewer than 15,000 words, your total cost will be no more than the $195 that you pay initially.

If your manuscript is longer than 15,000 words, we will add the additional total and send you an invoice once we receive your manuscript and conduct the word count. You must pay the deposit fee before we begin editing your manuscript. You can estimate the total cost yourself in advance by running “word count” on your document in Word for Windows and multiplying that number by 0.015. All editing fees become non-refundable once paid.

By ordering this option, you acknowledge that editors are human beings and, as such, you realize that this option is not a way to guarantee a 100% error-free manuscript. The editor will conduct a thorough basic edit over the manuscript’s punctuation, spelling, and grammar although, given the variables in accepted styles, the author realizes that some modifications, such as comma usage, can be subjective.

When the editors have completed your manuscript, you will be sent two versions. The first will outline the changes as shown in the picture above. The second will be a clean version with the changes already in place and ready to use. As you implement the editor’s suggested changes, a final review will ensure as pristine a document as humanly possible.

Note: This type of editing does not apply to slang, street talk, or cultural terminologies.
