The life of a book depends on taking the steps to bring it to life.
I got a phone call yesterday from a man who said he had written a novel over 15 years ago. He said it was all typed up and printed out and said it is about 75,000 words, but his manuscript is not saved on a computer file or disk. He went on to tell me that at one time a well known Publisher wanted to publish his book, but he said that the Publisher would not edit it, and that he would have to have the manuscript edited and then he would need to retype the edited version. It is a tragedy to hear this story. The man actually had a reputable publisher that wanted to publish his book and all he had to do was have it professionally edited. After 15 years of trying to get his book professionally edited he found my number and asked if it was possible to edit his 75,000 word manuscript and type it up for him for under $2000.00 because he said that is all he has to spend.
This is not an uncommon phone call. Sadly, I get similar calls like this pretty often. As a Publisher and as a Literary Service, obviously we all have a heart for Authors. In fact we are all Authors here as well and therefore we respect the work that people have put into their manuscript. We want to help. So what can people do if they have a manuscript that needs editing and also needs to be typed up in proper format for book publishing?
Here are the steps:
- Hire a professional book editor to edit your manuscript.
- Hire a Typing Service to put your edited manuscript on a word doc.

- Hire a Typing Service to put your manuscript onto a word doc.
- Hire a professional book editor to edit your manuscript in a word doc.
— or —
- Hire a Literary Service to do both edit and type in word doc at the same time.
What does a Literary Service actually do for you?
A Literary Service has the goal to help make sure your ideas are perceived the way you intend. However, they may tweak your story slightly or offer advice they feel is needed. They can make sure your spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct, and they can add a spark or a bang to your summary or your synopsis.
Empire Publishing and Literary Service Bureau offers everything one needs in order to publish a great manuscript. The cost of editing a manuscript in a word doc is 0.013 cents per word. So for example if you have a 50,000 word document it would be $650.00
Now, if you have a manuscript that needs to be typed up in a word doc you can have a friend or family member type it up for you if you cannot do it yourself. If you hire a professional typist or typing agency to do this it can cost you anywhere between .10 cents and .15 cents per word. Be leery of a typing service who charges by the hour, because everyone types perfect accuracy at a different speed.
Empire Publishing will type up and edit your manuscript for .08 cents per word. So for a 50,000 word manuscript it will cost $4,000.00
For those who purchase a Publishing package of Platinum or Titanium, editing the word doc is included. And if you need to have your manuscript typed up, then you can get it done for less than .05 cents per word when added to the Platinum or Titanium Packages.
The bottom line is, it is not cheap to pay someone else to handle your manuscript, so doing as much of the leg work yourself, such as typing it on a Word Doc, and having someone you trust read it for grammar structure and punctuation before you try to send it in for publishing is far more cost effective.
EDITING IS VITALLY IMPORTANT
If you want to publish a high-quality book, whether it is self-published or you are planning to go the old school route of attempting to secure an agent that might land you a contract with one of the large publishing houses, you must have your manuscript professionally edited.
Empire Publishing performs two rigorous rounds of editing. The first is mechanical using academic software and then is read from beginning to end by editors who have a BA Degree in English/Literature.
